First of all, are supplements absorbed?

Many supplements in common form or quality are often not well absorbed by our body. There is even much discussion in science about the usefulness of taking supplements. Of course, part of the active substances in a supplement are absorbed by our body, but in science it is sometimes said that taking supplements only creates expensive urine [source]. There is a significant difference between the amount of active ingredients in a supplement and the amount that is actually absorbed into our blood or into our body cells [source].

Getting active substances into the body cells is a complicated matter. This is largely because the substances are already broken down during transport in your body, before they reach their correct destination. Reasons for this are diverse, such as age, gender, time of day, state of health and the presence of other nutrients [source]. But the main reason is the state of your digestive system. Active ingredients in supplements must first pass through your digestive tract before they have a chance to be absorbed [source, source].

Liposomal supplements, how do they work?

In the pharmaceutical industry, they faced a major problem for a long time: the chemical medicines that they administered to patients were rejected because our body did not recognize these substances and considered them 'toxic'. As a result, they were not properly absorbed into the body tissue, which was of course the intention. A solution was eventually found for this: Liposomal delivery systems. A method that ensures that substances are transported directly to your body cells and is therefore not dependent on other factors in the body. This liposomal transport is now used in medicine, cosmetics, supplementation and in agriculture. But how exactly does this liposomal transport work and is it a natural process?

Simply put: with liposomal transport, an active substance remains completely intact and is not broken down in our digestive tract. Absorption is also not dependent on other substances in our body. To achieve this, naturally occurring liposomes are used. These are fat globules in which an active substance such as a medicine, vitamin, mineral or herb is packaged. These liposomes protect the active substance during its journey through your stomach, intestinal tract and the rest of your body. Science has proven for years that the substance that you package in liposome fat globules practically ends up in our body cells [source, source, source].

This is because the liposome fat globule is a body's own substance, namely choline (also known as vitamin B4). Everything that our body sees as its own is quickly and easily absorbed. After ingestion, the liposomal fat globule remains completely intact during the journey through your esophagus and stomach. The fat globule is then directly absorbed into the blood via our small intestine. After the liposomal fat globule containing the active substance enters the blood, the second important process takes place. The liposomes containing the active substance merge with your cell wall. The cell membrane is made up of choline [source]. By merging the liposome with the cell wall, the active substance in the liposomal fat globule is released directly into our body cell. This makes the substance available in the most effective place in our body. Below is a schematic representation of this special process.

Method of production makes the difference

It is therefore not surprising that you see more and more liposomal supplements appearing on the market these days, the advantages are enormous with regard to absorbability. However, there are different ways to produce liposomal supplements. The vast majority of manufacturers that produce liposomal supplements do not do the production in an ideal way. There is no requirement to call something liposomal, so anyone can put it on a jar and make it as they want. Whether a supplement has been made liposomal with the right care is often questionable. Most production methods use harmful chemicals, heat or high pressure. Exactly what you don't want.

When using high pressure or heat, the active ingredient is often damaged, which means you introduce a bad product into the cells. If chemicals, alcohol or preservatives are used for a liposomal supplement, these substances also end up in the fat globule. As a result, these harmful substances also end up in the cell and that is precisely what we want to prevent or counteract by taking supplements.
