Biotin, the answer for healthy skin and hair

Biotine huid haar , Hoogwaardige natuurlijke producten

What exactly is Biotin and what does it do?

Biotin is a water-soluble B-complex vitamin, it is also known as vitamin H, coenzyme R and vitamin B8.

Biotin is found in all cells and is essential for cell metabolism. Biotin is used by all living things - plants, animals and single-celled organisms. In animals, Biotin is essential for metabolizing proteins and converting sugar into usable energy. It also contributes to a healthy nervous system and helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels, but most importantly, Biotin promotes healthy skin and hair from the inside out.

Mammals, including humans, cannot synthesize Biotin and must therefore obtain it from food sources. Unfortunately, not everyone is able to do this. A Biotin deficiency is fortunately rare among humans, but it is very dangerous. For example, a deficiency during pregnancy can lead to birth defects. Symptoms of Biotin deficiency also include brittle nails, hair loss, muscle pain, nausea, fatigue, anemia and dry skin. There is no such thing as too much Biotin, which means that we only absorb the amount that we need. Any excess leaves our body through urine.

Which foods contain Biotin?

Although many animal foods contain Biotin, it is protein-bound Biotin. Plants contain 'free' Biotin, which has a higher bioavailability. With a vegetarian or vegan diet, you can easily get a good amount of Biotin. Given the other health benefits of a plant-based diet, it is also the healthiest choice. Below are food products that contain high concentrations of Biotin:

  • Walnuts and peanuts - all nuts contain biotin, but the concentrations vary widely. The nuts with the highest biotin concentration are peanuts and walnuts. They contain about 40 mcg per 100 grams.
  • Green Peas - Most peas are high in biotin, but green peas are especially high. These peas have 40 mcg of biotin per 100 grams when fresh and 70 mcg after drying.
  • Rice Bran - Less commonly used in daily nutrition, rice bran is a powerful source of Biotin. 100 grams contains about 65 mcg of Biotin. Never had it? Definitely worth trying.
  • Sunflower Seeds - Perhaps the highest concentration of Biotin found in a natural product. Sunflower seeds contain about 70 mcg of Biotin per 100 grams.
  • Carrots and cauliflower - vegetables also contain Biotin, especially carrots and cauliflower. These contain about 25 mcg of Biotin per 100 grams.
