The botanical name is Hericium erinaceus. The mushroom is a parasitic fungus and belongs to the family of stalk fungi (Basidiomycota). The mushroom grows on trunk wounds of old deciduous trees, for example in parks or along avenues. In many cases the wig fungus grows on beeches, but it also does so on oaks and robinias. It is a parasitic fungus, which means that the tree on which it grows slowly dies. After the tree dies, the mushroom lives on the rotting wood for a considerable time.</p> <p>The lion's mane mushroom is found in North America, Europe and Asia. The visible part of the mushroom is officially called the fruiting body. This appears in the summer until the fall. In China, the fruiting body is used both in herbal remedies and in cooking. The fruiting body is white or cream in color and has long, hanging spines.
