The longan is a fruit, which looks somewhat like the lychee. The tree on which it grows also comes from the same family as the lychee. The Chinese name is Long Yan Rou. This means Dragon Eye Meat. Of course, as a fruit, it is not really 'meat'. Generally, the fruit is called longan in other countries. This means 'dragon eyes'. The fruit is so named because, when fresh, the flesh of the peeled fruit has a translucent white colour. The dark brown seed is visible through the translucent flesh and resembles the pupil of an eye. This makes the fruit resemble the bulging eyes of the dragons often depicted in Chinese art.
