About the ginkgo tree in Ginkgo Leaf
Ginkgo is an incredibly strong tree. It can live for thousands of years and even survives nuclear explosions. No wonder that the philosopher, writer, poet, statesman and physicist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was inspired to write a poem about the ginkgo tree. That is why the ginkgo is also called the Goethe tree in Germany.
In Latin this plant is called Ginkgo biloba. The word ginkgo comes from the Japanese name Ginkyo, which according to old traditions comes from the Chinese name Yinhing. Yin means 'silver' and hing 'apricot'. In Japanese silver is 'gin' and apricot is 'kyo'. The fruit of the ginkgo tree actually looks like an apricot. Unfortunately, the fruit is hardly known in our West. The species name biloba means two-lobed. This comes from Latin, where bis 'two' means 'two' and lobus 'lobe'. It is a reference to the leaf. The leaf of the Ginkgo tree is deeply incised, so that it looks like two leaves. This is also called two-lobed.
