About the Chaga mushroom
Chaga is a mushroom or, more precisely, a fungus. The botanical name is Inonotus obliquus. In Dutch, this mushroom is called berkenweerschijnzwam. Outside the Netherlands, chaga, which comes from Russian, is the most commonly used name. Chaga grows in the circumpolar region of the world, on the northern side of our planet. Here it grows in deciduous forests. Chaga grows particularly where birch trees are exposed to cold weather conditions. Although the mushroom mainly grows on birch trees, the mushroom can also grow on elder, ash, beech, elm and even apple trees. When chaga grows on birch trees, it feeds on the nutrients and substances found in the birch. It then concentrates these substances in its own, exceptionally powerful, growth body. This makes it ready for use by people.
Chaga has been used by humans for thousands of years. Russian traditional medicine in particular uses it extensively (source). In Siberian Shamanism, the mushroom is even known as the 'King of the mushrooms'. Chaga is incredibly rich in nutrients. In particular, the content of polysaccharides and phenols is very high compared to other foods. Traditionally, chaga is mainly consumed in the form of tea. This can be made from chunks or from chaga powderNowadays we also see the mushroom a lot in chaga capsules.
Powerful nutrients in Chaga chunks
Chaga is the superfood of the 21st century. Superfoods are often characterized by their high antioxidant and nutrient content. The antioxidant qualities of a food are determined by the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) value. Chaga has the highest ORAC value ever determined in a natural food. The value is even higher than that of blueberry extract.
Chaga is particularly rich in nutrients. Among other things, it contains a high level of superoxide dismutase (often abbreviated as SOD). In addition, chaga contains melanin. Melanin gives chaga its brown color. This mushroom contains more of this substance than any other known food or herb. However, melanin is only found in wild chaga products. It is not found in cultivated products.
Another high-quality substance in chaga is betulin. This is an abundant naturally occurring triterpene. It is found in high concentrations in the bark of the birch tree. Betulin is the substance that makes the birch shine bright white. Chaga also converts betulin into the human absorbable form betulinic acid.
In addition, chaga contains polysaccharides, beta-glucans, polyphenols, serols, initodioles, triterpenoid saponins, lupeol and a whole list of vitamins, minerals and trace elements. No wonder it is called a superfood!
Directions for use for chaga tea, powder and tincture
Our Chaga Chunks are very versatile in use. You can use them multiple times, which also makes them very cost-effective. Below you will find an overview of the different preparation methods:
- Boil 100 grams of chaga chunks in 4 liters of water (minimum 30 minutes to maximum 6 hours), or a proportional amount thereof. Let it steep overnight for a very strong dark tea. Strain the tea the next morning and store it in bottles. You can drink the tea during the day. You can store the chaga chunks to steep tea again later. When you steep tea for the second time from the used chaga chunks, use 3 liters of water and the third time use 2 liters of water.
- This tea can also serve as a basis for a healthy chaga drink. For this, take a quarter of the cooled chaga tea and mix it with three quarters of boiled water. Sweeten the drink with honey to taste.
- You can also make tea directly from the chaga by putting a small piece in water at 80º C and drinking it.
- After brewing the tea 3 times, the used chaga chunks can be dried and then ground into powder and eaten.
- Making a tincture from the used chaga chunks is also possible. You can also leave the chaga chunks, after making tea three times, to steep in spirits (40% Vol.) for (at least) two weeks to make a chaga tincture.
