Eat Fat Get Slim - Busting Some Fat Myths - Protect Yourself From Disease and Illness By Eating The Good Fats - Barry Groves
Eat Fat, Get Slim Barry Groves, who lives with his wife Monica in the Cotswolds hills of Oxfordshire, England, can rightly call himself the UK's leading advocate of a low-carb, high-fat lifestyle. He began by questioning conventional dietary patterns and from 1982 onwards he devoted his time entirely to the relationship between diet and 'lifestyle diseases' such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Through his research he realised that the established ideas, both about low-calorie diets for weight loss and 'healthy diets' for heart disease, were flawed. Barry is now an internationally recognised author with many books to his name. He currently divides his time between researching, writing and lecturing on the management and prevention of obesity, diabetes and related conditions. Barry Groves is a director of the Foundation for Thymic Cancer Research (www.thymic.org), an honorary member of The Weston A. Price Foundation (www.westonaprice.org), co-founder of The International Network of Cholesterol Skeptics (www.thincs.org) and co-founder of the Fluoride Action Network (www.fluoridealert.org). Barry Groves does not limit himself to researching medical conditions and nutrition. Because of their long-standing interest in energy conservation, he and his wife Monica designed and built their own solar-heated house in three years. In this book you will read, among other things: * a great deal of information to promote your health; * how you can lose weight by eating and drinking the right fats; * how the government and the food industry, out of financial interest, misinform us; * that processed fats can make you sick.
Review
With the title of this book, the author immediately throws a spanner in the works: eating fat and losing weight seem to contradict each other. He then explains why this is not the case. The English writer struggled with being overweight himself many decades ago. He then studied nutrition and arrived at a low-carb, but high-fat diet. His guidelines have both similarities and differences with those of other low-carb diets. One difference is the gentle start. The carbohydrate content of the diet must be reduced gradually, so that the body can get used to it. Basic principles: do not count calories, no processed carbohydrates and factory food, but 'real' food, replace carbohydrates with fat, start with a protein-rich breakfast and exercise is allowed, but do what you enjoy. His theory is supported by literature. Good index; the appendix contains tables with carbohydrates and GI. Suitable for people who are interested in nutrition.
